Aang, an airbender was raised by monks in the southern air temple. A while after he found out he was the avatar, he herd that some monks wanted to take him away to learn other elements. Aang got upset and ran away that night. He was caught in a storm and frozen in a block of ice for 100 years. Katara and Sokka found him and he was unfrozen. Now he was to learn all 4 elements to defeat the fire lord.
Monk Gyatso was Aang's airbending teacher. He was almost like Aang's best friend. He was a very powerful monk. Sadly, the southern air temple was destroyed by the fire nation and Monk Gyatso died.

Katara was once the only waterbender on the South Pole and had to teach herself waterbending without a master. He father and other strong warriors left the village to defend the Earth Kingdom and she was left with her grandmother and brother to look after the village. She is very mature and acts much older then her age. Katara is brave and independent, as well as naturally gifted at waterbending.

Sokka was left the oldest male in his village after his father and the other men of the Southern Water Tribe left to help defend the Earth Kingdom. Sokka immediately tried to train the young children of the village how to defend it. Sokka tried yo defend everyone in the village, including his little sister Katara even though he was no help. He then chose to accompany his sister and Aang on a journey to defeat the fire lord. Sokka is a bit of a goof. He is clumsy, smart, brave and sometimes immature. Although, he is not that powerful as the others he travels with (because he is not a bender) Sokka is very helpful.

Hakoda is Sokka and Katara's father. He left to help defend the Earth Kingdom with the rest of the Southern Water Tribe men. His wife was killed when the fire nation attacked his village. He's an excellent father to Sokka and Katara, and used to be a big practical joker. He and Sokka are very similar.

It also led Kana, who he was engaged to (also Sokka and Katara's grandmother) in a arranged marriage, leave him. He loved her but she did not love him. He soon overcame his beliefs and agreed to teach both Katara and Aang waterbending.

Yue is princess of the Northern Water Tribe. She was a very sick baby. Nobody, even the Water Tribe's healers could cure her. They said she was going to die. Her father took her to the hidden Oasis and pleaded with the Ocean and Moon Spirits to save his daughter. When she was placed in the water, the moon spirit saved her. Her hair turned white and her body healed. She is brave, pleasant, respectful, and friendly. She is a bit shy when she first meets Sokka. The two become very close but she is frightened because of her arranged marriage with Hahn. She puts her people first and is extremely devoted to them. She sacrificed her life to bring the moon spirit back to life and became the moon spirit.

Zuko has always been pressured on his path to becoming the fire lord. Sadly, as a child, he wasn't the best bender; overshadowed by his sister Azula (an amazing bender) his father was constantly disappointed with him. Zuko spoke out against a battle plan in the Fire Lord's war room and was punished to a duel. He was horrified to find that the person he was dulling was his own father. When he refused to fight, The Fire Lord declared Zuko a disgrace who had shown shameful weakness in refusing to fight and banished him from the Fire Nation. He could only regain his honour by capturing the Avatar. Zuko is uptight, serious, determined and has an extremely short temper.

Iroh is the elder brother of Fire Lord Ozai. Iroh was once one of the Fire Nation's top generals. He was unsuccessful at a 600-day siege of Ba-Sing-Se, capital of the Earth Kingdom. Iroh lost his son, Lu Ten, who died. After that Iroh fell apart. A few years later, he joined his nephew on his mission to capture the Avatar. He has been traveling with Zuko ever since. Iroh loves is very wise. He loves to drink tea, relax, play games and play music.

Azula is Zuko's talented and cruel little sister. She overshadowed Zuko in firebending and is her father's favourite. She loves to watch her brother and others suffer. She even wanted her grandfather to hurry up and die so her father could become fire lord. She went to The Royal Fire Nation Academy for Girls where she met her friends, Mai and Ty Lee. She is an extremely powerful firebender who enjoys to summon lighting.
Zhao is intelligent, strong, and determined. He would do ANYTHING to get what he wants. He loves to order people around. He is one of the leading military officers in the Fire Navy. Zhao, like Zuko was on a mission to capture the Avatar to increase his standing. His greed came at a price, when he was killed by the Avatar.

In battle she is fast and strong.

Mai is best friends with Azula and Ty Lee. She was extremely board with her life at Omashu, she quickly excepted her invitation to join Azula's hunt for Aang, Zuko and Iroh. Mai yearns for excitement and loves to fight. She acts a bit dark.

Toph was born blind into the wealthy Bei Fong family. She had never had trouble seeing because of earthbending. Her parents kept her hidden from the world and assumed she was weak because of her blindness. She is one of the most powerful earthbenders and led a secret life as the blind bandit. She remained a champion at Earth Rumble Six. She possesses the ability to sense vibrations in the earth and "see" anything that touches the ground. She then met Aang and began to journey with him to teach him earthbending. Toph is the only bender capable of manipulating processed metals. She is very sarcastic and competitive. She loves to fight.
Suki is the leader of Kyoshi's female fan warriors. She and her warriors defend Kyoshi Island which has managed to avoid war. The warriors of the island dress up like Avatar Kyoshi and honour her. The whole island is basically a shrine to Avatar Kyoshi. It is pretty obvious that Suki and Sokka have feelings for each other. Suki is a strong, powerful and proud. At first, she was offended by Sokka's attitude against female warriors but eventually, after she easily beats him up, she takes him in a student. After Aang's group left Kyoshi Island, they had such an impact on Suki and her friends that, they left Kyoshi Island to fight in the war.

Jet's parents were murdered by the fire nation when he was only 8. He has a strong grudge against them and would do anything to stop them. After that he started and became leader of tree-top vigilantes band called the Freedom Fighters. After going a bit crazy and trying to rid their valley of the fire nation, he changed for the better and moved to Ba Sing Se. Jet is very smooth. Even though he tried to change his ways, Jet's behavior ranges from, murder to attacking innocent people. This is thought to have come from his violent past.
